ASCA trial in Whitesboro
Greg and Bungee
She didn't Q on cattle, but Greg handled great, crossed the handlers line and stepped in to help her out. The cows worked well, but were bigger than she'd seen before and she didn't have the power to hold pressure when she needed to. Because Greg was smart enough to step in and help her, she didn't lose her confidence and came back in on sheep and worked great. On Saturday morning, she Q'd under Dana Mackenzie to finish her ATD Sheep title. It was a really strong class-she got a 112.5 and didn't place. Scores went up to 120 or so. Saturday afternoon she got another Q in Advanced sheep. Sunday morning she also Q'd in Advanced Sheep. In her afternoon run she left her brain in the car (and so did Greg <g>),so that one ended with Greg calling time at the pen. Greg and Oak:Oak started Saturday a bit wild and narrowly missed a Q. Greg got a handle on him for the afternoon run and took 1st place to finish his Open Sheep title. On Sunday, they stayed in Open and Q'd both runs, taking 4th place in the morning trial and 1st place in the afternoon trial with a 117.5! Alyson & Talon Saturday morning we Q'd on Open Cattle and took 2nd place to finish her title. I took a deep breath and moved her up to Advanced in the afternoon. She Q'd and got all 5 head thru the Y chute and we got our first Advanced leg. On Sunday, she was a more stressed, and popping around instead of holding pressure. So I crossed the line to help her out, we got thru the cross-drive and went to the repen. I briefly tried the Y chute, but the cows were moving fast downhill and I didn't have enough dog left to turn them. On Advanced Sheep, Talon really listened and gave me some gorgeoous cross drives. I haven't done a freestanding pen since April, and she nailed it in all 4 runs on the first try. On Saturday, she Q'd both runs, with a 4th place under Dana (our 117.5 was only good enough for 4th-JDCoonrod pulled a 120, 2nd was 119, 3rd was 118). On Sunday in her first run she had a sheep that wanted to face her and fight. She tried, but was starting to get darty, so I crossed the line and walked with her to keep her holding pressure instead of slipping around like she tends to do. The darn sheep backed most of the way down the first fence and halfway thru the cross drive before he turned to move. She finished with her best pen of the weekend. On her last run, she came back, strong and we Q'd.The sheep worked very well-the one "fighter" I had on Sunday was the exception. It looked like they'd culled out a lot of the older wethers and were working 2-3 lambs in each group. The groups were uniform and weren't flighty as long as the dogs worked back and didn't get too pushy. We didn't run ducks, but from what little I saw they worked like average ducks-no better, no worse. They weren't the same ducks as the last several trials up there. These were tan/brown with green heads. Last year at this trial we got a lot of polite comments along the lines of "your dogs have a lot of potential." (people were kind enough not to finish the sentence "but you suck as handlers"!!) This year, several people, most particularly the judges, commented on how much our handling and our dogs' performances have improved. Dana especially said she chould tell we've been putting in the hours, and was very complimentary of Alan & Marie for teaching us so well. I have to second that last comment. Our goals for the weekend included handling calmly and quietly, and we achieved that-no yelling, staying focused and controlled even when things got a little undone. I kept thinking "what would Alan tell me to do in this situation," then did it-especially on handling the freestanding pen. On cattle, I remembered what Kyle taught me in the last clinic about where to position both me and the dog. Greg used what Marie taught him about handling Oak and keeping him contained, not over flanking and stopping him before he got all rev'd up and out of position. That was one of the coolest things-finally being calm enough in the ring to be able to think, and drawing on what we've learned at Alamar. So a big thank you-we felt like you were with us even though you couldn't be there in person!!

In June of this year, Alamar took to the road.  A group of 6 people and
20 dogs headed north to Nebraska and then on to WI for a 3 day stay with
family.  We ended up at a trial in Minnesota where overall, Alamar
looked pretty good.  A great time was had by all and it was great to
work in different parts of the country.   Here are the results of those
trials.

Greg & Allyson - "It was a great weekend, and we couldn't have done it without all the
guidance and training we've received at Alamar. Throughout the weekend
several people asked where we train, and commented on how nicely the
dogs worked. Greg and Oak are going to be the ones to watch: Dana
wrote that "he will make a superior trial dog." Cecil Pettit told me
that I better double my training efforts, or Greg is going to kick my
butt with that black & tan dog."
