"Mike
the Dog"
May 10, 1993- October, 2001
Mike was our
first Border Collie. Although Alan loves Storm, he always admired
the working ability of the American Border Collie. When Mike was
offered to us by Russell McCord he jumped at the chance to own his
first Border Collie.
Mike was about
10 months old and had had a month or so of training. He was a litter
mate to Russell McCord's Sam. So Mike, who we thought was a hound
the first time we saw him came to town. He was a tri-colored smooth
coat, neither of which we had seen before. Mike may have rivaled
Flirt as the perfect dog. Anyone who ever met Mike was stuck by
his quiet, calm demeanor. He never met anyone he didn't like and
could be trusted to always be on his best behavior whether at a
show, trial, or in school as a therapy dog. Mike was truly one in
a million!
Although he
dabbled in agility, Mike's first love, next to Alan, was herding.
He got his AKC novice agility title in 3 straight shows with all
first places.
In herding,
at his first 2 trials he went High in Trial both days. He also had
multiple High and Reserve High in Trial awards. He and Alan were
inseparable around the farm. Wherever Alan went, Mike was always
on his heels! The question, Where's Mike? was usually followed with,
look behind you.
We lost Mike
last fall, much too early. He now lies at the gate to a field now
known as Mike's Field. We will never forget him and he will be missed
by all who knew him, none more than his best buddy, Alan.
